What fires together wires together

Scientists have to go through many experiments, studies and brain imaging tests in order to analyze and understand synapses, lobes, cortexes and our brains in general. The objective of this course is to really understand how the brain works, and to learn how to differentiate between the brain, the mind and consciousness.

The evolution of our nervous system includes a lot of myth busting. Every time a new function of the brain has been analyzed, old misconceptions had to be corrected and true understanding had to be brought to the people. This is not always easy, because mass media, the general school medicine and pharma interests are always opposed to anything that gives people more power over their own lives.

For example, in the past people believed that the brain of a baby looks like an empty paper when they are born. The truth is, that we already have many genetic tendencies to advance our own species and optimize our body and brain to the current environment and we also have the ability to rewrite our parents’ DNA coding. Our body continuously creates new cells and builds new connections in order to develop our individual characters and personalities.

The paradigm of the new science postulates: it is important to learn where to put your focus, the relevance of paying attention to emotions and thoughts. Everybody is talking now about emotional intelligence. We don´t have to be a victim of our feelings. Most times, we become prey of our feelings because we are so strongly attached to them. “In fact we are attached to the brain circuits connected with these emotions.”

Human beings have the natural ability to focus our consciousness on anything we choose to. It is possible to consciously learn where to place our attention, what we place our attention on, and for how long we place it there. What we constantly think about and where we focus our attention on, is what will neurologically form our identity. Anything you spend your time on mentally, is what you will become and what will create your future. Ultimately, our mental focus will define our lives us on a neurological level.

A life under stress is living in a primitive state of survival, common to most animal  species. When we live in survival mode, we limit our evolution, because the chemicals of stress will always control our big-thinking brain and make it stay in low and negative vibration. In effect, we become more animal-like and less divine when we live in stress. These chemicals of stress are the main reason why our internal state changes and they also initiate the process of cellular breakdown. If you examine those effects on the body, the main problem does not come from short term stress but of chronic long-term stress that weakens our bodies and cells.

If we remain in the same stressful circumstances over a longer period, because our body has become addicted to this emotional state and the corresponding chemicals, we live in survival mode and can not grow or create a new life. Only when we understand that we also have the capacity to rewire our brain, because we are capable of making a thought more real to us than anything else in the universe – may it be a bad or a good thought, this choice is entirely left to us. We must deliver ourselves with the help of our minds . . . “for one who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for the one who has failed to do so, the mind will remain the greatest enemy”.

4 steps of learning on a neurological level:

Thoughts Are Real; Thoughts Directly Affect the Body The way we think affects our body as well as our daily life, therefore we use the expression “mind over matter.” Many people share this belief and they also apply it as a basis for making conscious changes in their own mind, body, and personal life.

The thought-feeling loop: this happens when the body responds to a thought by having a feeling, this initiates another response in the brain. The brain, which constantly monitors and evaluates the state of the body, notices that the body is feeling a certain negative feeling. In response to that bodily feeling, the brain generates thoughts that produce corresponding chemical messengers; now you begin to think the way you are feeling. Thinking creates a feeling and then feeling creates thinking, in a continuous cycle. This loop eventually creates a particular state in the body that determines the general nature of how we feel and behave. We can call this a “state of being”.

We think the same thoughts over and over again, which then produces the same chemicals inside the body. This very process will cause the body to experience the same feelings. In the end, we can become even modified physically by our own thoughts. Depending on the energy or intensity of our thoughts, what we think about will determine our health, our choices and ultimately our quality of life.

As a starting point, if you want to change your yourself, you should start by paying constant attention to your thoughts. In particular, it is important to make a conscious effort to observe your automatic thought processes, especially the harmful ones. To most people it is a big surprise, to find that most of the persistent, negative inner statements we tell ourselves are not even true. In other words, just because we have a thought does not necessarily mean that it is true.

if conscious thoughts are repeated often enough, they become unconscious thinking. A good example for this, is that we must consciously focus on every action when we learn how to drive a car. But after months of practice, people can drive 100 miles from point A to point B and not remember any part of the trip, because the subconscious mind is typically steering the wheel. We have all experienced being in an unaware state during a routine drive, only to feel our conscious mind re-engaging in response to an unusual engine sound or the rhythmic sound of a flat tire. So, if we continually entertain the same thoughts, they will start off as conscious ones, but they will ultimately become unconscious, automatic thought programs.

It takes awareness and effort to break the cycle of a the thinking process that has become unconscious, and therefore automatic. First, we need to step out of our routines so we can look at our lives. Through contemplation and self-reflection, we can start to become aware of our unconscious programs. Next, we must observe these thoughts without responding to them, so that they no longer initiate the automatic chemical responses that produce habitual behavior. Within all of us, we possess a level of self-awareness, which can observe our thinking. We must learn how to be separate from these programs and when we do, we can willfully have control over them. Ultimately, the objective is to take full control over our thoughts. In doing so, we can neurologically break apart the negative thinking that has become hardwired in our brain.

1. By learning new information (semantic memories) and having new experiences (episodic memories) we make new synaptic connections and evolve our brain’s hardware.

2. We learn by association! We use what we already know to understand the many unknowns we encounter. When neurological networks fire that are already developed from our past knowledge and experience, these parts of the brain are now receptive to making new synaptic connections for new information. This is Hebb’s Fire together wire together model of learning.

3. We remember by repetition! When we put our full attention on what we are learning and practice it repeatedly, firing these synaptic connections time and time again, chemicals are released that cause the synapses between neurons to form long-term relationships. Neurons that repeatedly fire together, wire together more strongly.

4. We have hardware in our brain that enables us to learn, to make the unknown know on both the Hebbian level of neurons (microscopic) and on the level of dual-brain (macroscopic) processing.

The information really isn’t overwhelming and it can add a lot to our general literacy and understanding of our brain. What is really useful, is that we have definitions for the brain, the mind and consciousness.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, but it can roll away. Our brain evolves in accordance with how we utilize it, so everybody’s brain is different based on each and everyone´s individual education, occupation and environment. The brain adapts to whatever we expose it to. How the brain works? In a few words summarized it is what fires together wires together.

This way if a person is blind the brain can still utilize the unused part of the brain to enhance some other function. This is how blind people learn to read braille writing. The body creates finer receptors that are processed in the visual cortex. By learning new information (semantic memories) and having new experiences (episodic memories) we make new synaptic connections and elevate our brain’s hardware.

It is of the highest importantce to demystify stress. When we explore stress, how it comes to be, what the original purpose of that stress was and how it got turned inside-out in the modern world. We also need to talk about addiction to our routines and our emotionas attached to them. It is highly possible that our brains are addicted to our comfort zones, to daily routines and the familair chemistry of our repeated thoughts. This is slowing us down and it is not contributing to growth. In this position, we don’t get the chance to get better, to elevate our mind.

A special abd unique part of our brain, our frontal lobe. In the whole animal kingdom, the ratio of the frontal lobe to the rest of the brain is the highest for humans. The frontal lobe is what allows us to deny the built-in processes of the brain and the outside stimulus so that we can act on our free will. This part of the brain is where we can break our habits and what can allow us to concentrate. Buddhist monks have mastered this part of their brain. Their activity reading in this part of the brain is off the charts. This proves that the frontal lobe can be exercised like a muscle.

We have to emphasize the importance of paying attention to emotions. We have already mentioned the buzzword “emotional intelligence”. What does that mean? First of all, it means that we don’t have to fall prey to our emotions. We do because we are attached to them; or as Joe Dispenza would say, “We are attached to the brain circuits connected with our emotions.”

As human beings, we have the natural ability to focus our awareness on anything. We need to learn how and where we place our attention, what we place our attention on, and for how long we place it there! This new way of focusing our energy will ultimatel defines who we are on a neurological level.

“Whether we think we can,” noted Henry Ford once, “or we think we can’t, we are right.” We believe we already made a case why Ford would think that. Some of the greatest scientists alive believe that it is entirely possible that we are living in a “universal choose-our-own-adventure” narrative! The difference between our lives and choose-our-own-adventure fantasies, however, is that in the latter case, we can always go back to the branching page and choose once again to experience the better adventure.
