What is the Meaning of Self-Image?

The concept of the Self-Image is exactly what we see when we look in the mirror- but here it will get much deeper than that. Self-Image means how we see ourselves on a more general level, both internally and externally. “Self-Image is how you perceive yourself. It is a number of self-impressions that have built up over time… Our Self-Image can be very positive, giving a person confidence in their thoughts and actions, or negative, making a person doubtful of their capabilities and ideas.”

What are the benefits of having a positive Self-Image?

1. Better social relationships: If you have a positive Self-Image, you have a belief that you have something to give to the world. This helps you bring more to the table in your relationships, which makes them stronger. 

2. You have a positive perception of life: A healthy self-concept and self-respect can enable you to see the sunny side an positive aspects in any potentially difficult situation.

3. You can adapt to any situation: People with self-esteem and supportive relationships can adapt better to changes, including accepting a new job or moving to a new place.

4. You become more open-minded: Self-esteem lets you appreciate what others recommend or suggest with you bending to their will. Instead, you stay open-minded and always willing to learn from others. But when time comes to make decisions, you make the ones best for all, not only for you or others.

5. You accept yourself more: Self-esteem lets you accept yourself as you are and give yourself more time to achieve your goals. As you develop your self-esteem, recognize that mistakes and failures happen. Instead of seeing them as problems, begin to see them as opportunities to learn and grow.

6. You can cope much better: Self-esteem allows you to cope with setbacks while knowing you did your best. You accept that others will not always agree with you. When people disagree with you, you are still ok. With high self-esteem, you accept people´s opinions and decisions and still believe in yourself .

  • Self-Image is to be understood as a psychological and emotional process about how we perceive ourselves on a more universal level, both internally and externally within the context of how we interpret the world.
  • These Self-Images can be very positive, giving a person confidence in their thoughts and actions, or negative, making a person doubtful of their capabilities and ideas.
  • Physical Description: I’m tall, Im short, I have blue eyes, I have long legs, …etc.
  • Social Roles: We are all social beings and our behavior is shaped to a large extent by the roles we play. Such roles are for example, being a student, a housewife, or a member of the local football team. These roles do not only help others to know we are, but also help us to know what is expected of us in different situations.
  • Self-Image is a part of self-concept, namely the self-concept represents a more general idea of our identity than the Self-Image.
  • As children we learn to believe that we live as single individuals, separated physically from others and on that premise we learn to define our existence over time and space (the existential Self).
  • Self-esteem looks not only at how we see ourselves but also how much we appreciate and value our life.

  • High Confidence in our own capabilities
  • High level of Self-acceptance
  • Self-Talk (as dicussed previously)
  • Environmental Feedback – If people like us, compliment us and want to be around us, pay close attention and approve our opinions, we are more likely to generate a positive Self-Image about ourselves.
  • Comparing ourselves with others –  If people in our peer group, people we compare ourselves with, have more money, more success, seem to be happier, have nice relationships, are smarter or have better jobs and even look better than us, logically we are more likely to generate a negative Self-Image.
  • When we experience a gap between our current Self-Image and the ideal-self we imagine, it is definitely going to have a deep impact on how much we appreciate and love ourselves.
  • Therefore, our Self-Image, self-esteem and the ideal vision of ourselves are deeply interconnected with each other.
  • The six characteristics of a person’s Self-Image are:
  • Physical dimension: how a person evaluates his or her appearance
  • Psychological dimension: how a person evaluates his or her existence
  • Intellectual dimension: how a person evaluates his or her intelligence
  • The way people perceive life or think of themselves.
  • The way people interpret or view other people´s perceptions and opinions (or what they believe other people think, especially about them).
  • The way people wants or imagine to be like (their ideal version of themselves).
